On December 17, 1831, the Italian schooner Achille reported finding only a rocky shoal where the island had stood. The entire landmass had been dismantled and redistributed across the seafloor in just five months.
The Four-Nation Scramble for Disappearing Real Estate
On August 2, 1831, Captain Humphrey Fleming Senhouse of HMS St. Vincent landed on the island with several officers, planted the Union Jack on the smoking summit, and claimed it for Britain as "Graham Island" after Sir James Graham, First Lord of the Admiralty. Senhouse's report to the Admiralty emphasized the island's strategic position along Mediterranean shipping lanes. The British government briefly considered establishing a coaling station there, despite the ongoing volcanic activity and the island's obvious structural instability.
