Answer: The shooting of a British diplomat's pig on San Juan Island — The Pig War is the only military confrontation in history where the sole casualty was a pig that wandered into the wrong garden and ate some potatoes. Despite this, 461 Americans and five British warships faced off for months, loaded weapons at the ready, over who owned the island.
On June 15, 1859, American farmer Lyman Cutlar spotted a large black pig rooting through his potato patch on San Juan Island, a contested piece of land between Washington Territory and British Columbia. He'd warned the pig's owner before. This time, Cutlar shot it. The pig belonged to Charles Griffin, an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company, and suddenly an agricultural nuisance became an international incident.
Both the United States and Britain claimed the San Juan Islands under vague treaty language, and both had citizens living there under their respective flags. When British authorities threatened to arrest Cutlar, American settlers panicked and called for military protection. Brigadier General William S. Harney dispatched Captain George Pickett (later famous at Gettysburg) with 64 soldiers. The British responded by sending three warships carrying 2,140 men. For weeks, the two forces stared each other down, fingers on triggers, over a dead farm animal.
Cooler heads eventually prevailed. Both governments, still recovering from costlier wars, agreed to joint military occupation while diplomats sorted out the border. This bizarre arrangement lasted twelve years. In 1872, German Emperor Wilhelm I arbitrated the dispute and awarded the islands to the United States. The Pig War remains a testament to how the smallest spark—one hungry pig, one frustrated farmer—can nearly ignite empires, and how fortunate we are when leaders choose negotiation over the momentum of pride.
