On July 21, 1969, after planting the American flag and collecting rock samples, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin deployed something far less photogenic but infinitely more useful: a two-foot-wide panel studded with 100 cube-corner prisms. These retroreflectors work like the reflectors on your bicycle, bouncing light directly back to its source no matter what angle it arrives from.

Scientists on Earth fire powerful laser pulses at this mirror array, then measure how long it takes for the photons to make the 477,000-mile round trip. The precision is staggering: they can measure the Moon's distance to within a single millimeter. That's like measuring the distance from New York to Los Angeles to within the width of a human hair.

What have we learned from half a century of lunar laser ranging? The Moon is spiraling away from Earth at 1.5 inches per year—meaning dinosaurs saw a Moon noticeably closer than we do. We've confirmed Einstein's theory of general relativity to extraordinary precision, detected minute wobbles in the Moon's orbit, and even measured the liquid core deep inside our satellite. Apollo 14 and 15 left additional arrays, and Soviet rovers deposited two more.

Today, observatories in Texas, Arizona, France, and Italy still routinely bounce lasers off these mirrors. They've survived five decades of temperature swings from -280°F to 260°F, micrometeorite bombardment, and solar radiation that would destroy any electronic instrument. The retroreflectors represent the longest-running experiment in space science history—a silent testament to 1960s engineering that requires no power, no commands, and asks for nothing except that we keep looking up.
