A Volcanic Lake's Hidden Reservoir

Lake Nyos sits in the crater of an extinct volcano that last erupted some 400 years ago. Though the cone is dormant, magma beneath the lake still releases carbon dioxide through fissures in the crater floor. Over centuries, this CO₂ dissolves into the lake's depths, where pressure and cold temperatures keep it locked in solution, much like carbonation in a sealed soda bottle. The lake is nearly 700 feet deep and thermally stratified—warm surface water sits atop a colder, denser layer that rarely mixes. By 1986, the bottom waters held an estimated 90 million cubic meters of dissolved gas, a concentration high enough to saturate the liquid. Geochemist Haraldur Sigurdsson, who led the early investigations, calculated that a disturbance—possibly a landslide, a small earthquake, or even a shift in water temperature—caused the bottom layer to overturn. The Cloud That Fell Like Water

Carbon dioxide is 1.5 times denser than air, so the gas released from Lake Nyos didn't dissipate upward—it flowed downhill like a liquid, hugging the ground and filling valleys. Eyewitnesses 15 miles away reported seeing a white cloud or mist rolling through the darkness, moving faster than a person could run. The cloud was nearly 150 feet thick in places, and because CO₂ is odorless and invisible in low concentrations, most victims never knew what hit them. A man named Ephriam Che, who survived by climbing a tree, said he watched neighbors collapse mid-step, as if struck by a spell. Animals dropped where they stood; insects fell from the air. The gas extinguished cooking fires and kerosene lamps, plunging entire villages into darkness before the final silence. By morning, the cloud had thinned and blown away on the breeze, leaving behind a landscape of the dead. Relief workers arriving later that day found entire families in their beds, some still holding hands, and cattle lying in fields as if asleep. The few survivors—mostly those on high ground or at the periphery of the cloud—spoke of headaches, confusion, and a burning sensation in the eyes and lungs.

The Degassing Solution and Its Limits

After the disaster, geologists realized that Lake Nyos and a similar lake, Lake Monoun—which killed 37 people in 1984—sit atop a volcanic field where the risk of limnic eruptions recurs every few decades if CO₂ isn't vented. In 2001, French engineers installed a degassing pipe in Lake Nyos: a 200-meter tube that extends to the lake bottom, where gas pressure forces water upward in a fountain, releasing CO₂ safely into the air. Today, three pipes vent several cubic meters of gas per second, visible as permanent geysers on the lake's surface. Yet the system is fragile—the pipes corrode, funding for maintenance is scarce, and the lake's gas content remains high enough that a sudden landslide could still trigger another eruption. Meanwhile, 10,000 people have resettled near the lake, drawn by fertile volcanic soil and fresh water. Scientists warn that the degassing network must remain operational indefinitely, or Nyos could kill again. Only two other lakes in the world—Monoun and Lake Kivu on the Rwanda-Congo border—are known to hold similar gas reservoirs, making limnic eruptions a rare but recurring threat where volcanic geology and deep water converge.
