What makes koala sleep truly remarkable is its quality, or rather, its lack thereof. Studies have revealed that koalas experience little to no rapid eye movement (REM) sleep—the phase associated with dreaming and memory consolidation in most mammals. Instead, they spend their sleeping hours in slow-wave sleep, a deeper state of rest. Scientists believe this may be another adaptation to their low-energy lifestyle, as REM sleep is metabolically expensive, requiring increased brain activity and oxygen consumption.

The koala's unusual sleep patterns raise intriguing questions about the function of REM sleep itself. While humans and most mammals spend roughly 20-25% of sleep time in REM, koalas manage perfectly well without it. This challenges assumptions about REM sleep being universally essential for mammals and suggests that different species have evolved dramatically different neurological needs based on their ecological niches.

Their tiny brains—among the smallest relative to body size of any mammal—may also play a role. With less neural complexity to maintain, koalas might simply not require the neural housekeeping that REM sleep provides to larger-brained animals. It's a perfect example of evolution streamlining an organism to match its environment, even if that means spending most of life asleep.
