The Moon is spiraling away from Earth at about 1.5 inches per year, confirming theories about tidal forces and angular momentum transfer. The measurements also revealed that the Moon has a liquid core and helped scientists test Einstein's theory of general relativity with unprecedented accuracy. Later Apollo missions (14, 15) and Soviet rovers deposited additional reflectors, creating a network of measurement points.
Over fifty years later, these reflectors remain perfectly functional, requiring no power or maintenance. They represent a rare example of space hardware that improves with age—as laser technology on Earth has advanced, the measurements have only grown more precise. Modern observatories can now track the Moon's position to millimeter accuracy, making these silent sentinels among the most productive scientific instruments ever deployed beyond Earth. The reflectors will likely continue their work for centuries, long after all other traces of human presence on the Moon have degraded.
