But these individual costs do not prevent population growth. A 2016 study in *Functional Ecology* found that bird abundance in the zone matched or exceeded that in uncontaminated areas, reinforcing the conclusion that human absence trumps radiation presence in shaping wildlife recovery.

What Scientists Learned from an Unplanned Experiment

The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone has become an unintended laboratory for studying how ecosystems respond to human removal. No other place on Earth combines such a large area, such an abrupt human departure, and such comprehensive scientific monitoring. Beginning in the 1990s, Ukrainian and international research teams established long-term camera-trap networks, radio-collared wolves and lynx, and conducted genetic studies on multiple species. Their findings challenge widespread assumptions about pollution and conservation. Radiation is harmful, but it does not destroy ecosystems the way human land use does. The zone demonstrates that apex predators can recolonize landscapes rapidly when given space, that rewilding does not require active management, and that nature can recover even in environments humans consider ruined.
